Raw video: Candlelight vigil for victims

On the day after an unthinkable tragedy, perspective and reason came from an unlikely source.

"I can't think of any other reason other than God wanted this to happen," said Doug Moyers whose daughter died in a terrible accident in Baytown Thursday.

Loral Moyers, 12, and three teenage friends were killed when the stolen SUV they were in slammed into a stalled train.

The 15-year-old driver and another passenger remain hospitalized.

The top of the SUV was ripped off as it went under the train.

Doug Moyers said the tragic accident should be a wakeup call for other youths in the community.

"These children died here so that all of you could hear this and have the opportunity to live," Moyers told a group of young people.

Many of the youngsters say his message has already hit home.

"I'm sure... it touched everyone that I've talked to. And I think he's right. It happened for a reason," said Cayce Issacs.

Grief counselors were at Robert E. Lee High School Friday to help the community cope.

Thursday evening, grieving family members and friends gathered near the spot where the four young people died.

Dozens of people attended the candlelight vigil near the crossing at Archer Road and Fleming.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, six teenagers were in the stolen Jeep when the driver apparently did not see a Union Pacific train that had apparently been stalled on the tracks for some time. The SUV slammed into the tanker car at a high rate of speed and went under it into a ditch.

“There were some short skid marks,” Harris County Lt. John Martin said. “It would appear the driver noticed the train immediately before impact, but not early enough to stop hitting the train.”

Along with Loral Moyers, the dead have been identified as her cousin, 14-year-old Maci Moyers, 14-year-old Colette Windham and 13-year-old Austin Davis.

The driver and front-seat passenger, both 15, were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by Life Flight.

Bobby Davis remained in critical condition Friday. Blake Barger was in fair condition at last check.

Loral Moyers had snuck out of her home, just hours after her father had set down ground rules for the summer.

"It's unbelievable what has happened," Doug Moyers said the morning after the accident. "I can see my daughter's big toe sticking out from underneath the white blanket; that's all I can see of her is her big toe."

There are no streetlights or lights that indicate that there is a train crossing. But the state agreed Friday to install them.

"You know what -- that crossing was bad," Moyers said. "It was destined; it was doomed. Those lives were taken because of our negligence."
