Will a crackdown push sexual business into the county?
01:36 PM CDT on Tuesday, June 5, 2007
Will the city of Houston’s crackdown on sexually oriented businesses mean trouble for Harris County? That’s what the commissioner’s court is talking about as well as ways to prevent these businesses from relocating into unincorporated areas.
County commissioners met on Tuesday in downtown Houston to discuss the issue. Although the meeting was simply to talk about the problem, it seems likely that they will take some level of action in the days, weeks, and months ahead. The issue being discussed is the impact that Houston’s ongoing crackdown on sexually oriented businesses will have on the surrounding area of Harris County.
In recent months, city officials have gone after 30 sexually oriented businesses in hopes of driving them outside of city boundaries.
The city and county are pretty much in line when it comes to how close the schools, parks and churches many of these businesses can operate. Only two sexually oriented businesses are in operation in Harris County.
This has people wondering whether these businesses will now leave the city in mass and take up residence outside of Houston and inside Harris County.
This is also what county commissioners are hoping the county attorney can help them answer. They hope to have an answer in the months to come.
