Mom of microwaved baby: Satan was threatened by Joshua
05:59 PM CDT on Tuesday, May 22, 2007
GALVESTON -- The man accused of putting his baby in a microwave appeared in court in Galveston Tuesday morning.
Joshua Mauldin’s attorney filed a motion in Galveston’s 212 th State District Court to have his bond reduced, which the judge denied.
The bond is set at $250,000.
Mauldin’s attorney also asked that his client undergo a psychological evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.
The judge granted that request, and a doctor from UTMB is set to conduct the exam.
A detective said the night Mauldin and his family arrived at the Quality Inn in Galveston he was frustrated about something.

Mauldin says he hit the infant, tossed her on a bed, put her in a refrigerator then put her in the microwave.
The child, who suffered external burns, is in a foster home.
Children’s Protective Services released the toddler into the Galveston County couple’s care after they underwent special training on how to meet and treat the girl’s medical needs said agency spokeswoman Gwen Carter.
“She was doing really well, making eye contact, and was responsive to hospital staff when they held her,” Carter said.
Even though the baby suffered external burns, a CT scan and MRI found no internal injuries. The child does not need any special medical equipment, but has a pair of skin grafts that will have to be tended to.
While Mauldin remains in custody, his wife told 11 News reporter Karla Barguiarena she is standing by him.
Eva Mauldin claims her husband was “possessed by Satan” when he harmed their child. She remains in Galveston.
Eva Mauldin: “He told me he put her in the microwave but he said I didn’t do that he said that my body did it but that I didn’t do it.”
Karla Barguiarena: “What does that mean?”
Eva Mauldin: “You got me. He says he did it like he’d seen himself doing it but he couldn’t stop it.”
Mrs. Mauldin said too that while she believes her husband was under some form of demonic possession when he placed their baby in the microwave, she does not condone his actions.
“I am standing by him as a wife and not at all saying what he did was all right,” she said. “I am staying beside him to make sure he gets the help he needs.”
Mauldin brought his wife, daughter and mother to Galveston on May 9 after he said he was called there to be a minister, his wife said.
The family checked into the Quality Inn on Seawall Boulevard. He told police that he put his daughter in the microwave oven in the early morning of May 10 because he was under stress. Mrs. Mauldin insists his actions were because he had been possessed by Satan because, “Satan was threatened by Joshua.”
CPS scheduled a mediation hearing for Wednesday morning to determine the care and custody of the child. At this point CPS has a court order to deny both parents’ rights.
Eva Mauldin says she will ask for custody.
The charge against Mauldin carries a possible sentence of anywhere from five to 99 years.
