A former Pasadena substitute teacher is out on a $20,000 bond under allegations that he had improper relations with a student.

Eric McDaniel, 32, is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old female student he met at Pasadena Memorial High School.

He turned himself in to the Harris County Sheriff’s Department Monday night and bonded out.

Police said he allegedly met with the girl, a senior, twice off-campus, once in a department store parking lot and another time at the home he is said to share with his parents.

“A witness saw suspicious activity and reported it immediately,” Candace Ahlfinger of Pasadena ISD said.

McDaniel had worked for the district since the start of the school year. School district officials said he passed a background check.

“He just seemed like a really cool guy. He didn’t seem like he would do something like that,” student Brian Bostick said.

As a substitute, school administrators said McDaniel worked day-to-day, having accumulated some 30 work days this school year.

As of Tuesday, he was no longer employed by Pasadena ISD.

Parents of students at all of the schools McDaniel worked at will be notified of the allegations against him throughout the day by way of an automated telephone system.

“They will actually learn of the incident, that this person has been a substitute in our district, and what steps to take if they have any suspicion that anything has happened or have seen anything suspicious,” Ahlfinger said.

McDaniel is expected to make his first court appearance Wednesday.

He faces two charges of improper relations with a student.
