Whitaker moves to new home on death row
04:10 PM CDT on Tuesday, March 27, 2007
Almost three weeks after a jury sentenced him to death, Bart Whitaker has finally arrived on death row.
TDCJ
Texas Department of Criminal Justice Spokesman Jason Clark said the state took custody of Whitaker Friday from the Fort Bend County jail.
The 27-year-old became the 388th on death row at the Polunsky Unit in Livingston.
Whitaker was found guilty of plotting a violent home invasion in December of 2003 that left his mother Patricia and his brother Kevin dead.
His father was severely wounded in the attack that was hatched so that Whitaker could inherit $1 million.
Whitaker kept quiet for most of the trial, broke his silence during the punishment phase of his trial.
The first words out of his mouth were: "I am 100 percent guilty for this. I put the plan in motion."
Whitaker claims he did not do it for money, but because he hated his parents and thought they didn't love him.
He now says that was wrong.
"This is all my fault, and whatever you decide I deserve for this, I accept," Whitaker told the jury.
The 27-year-old was sentenced to death March 8th.
An execution date is not set until all the appeals have been exhausted. Whitaker automatically gets one.
His father testified that Bart has not asked for any more after that.
