A 5-week-old baby boy is in the hospital recovering from two surgeries after his genitals were mutilated.

The baby has more surgeries scheduled.
On Tuesday, the boy's mother said she woke up at her southeast Houston apartment around 3 p.m. to hear the baby crying. When she went into his room, she saw the family's dog, a Daschund, over the baby.
CPS said the baby was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by ambulance, and he was pale and lifeless due to the loss of blood.
The child has had two surgeries and more are scheduled. There was extensive damage internally and externally and to veins and arteries.
He remains in very critical condition.
"If this baby survives this is something that can have physical and emotional impact on him for the rest of his life," said
AP
said Estella Olguin with CPS.
Doctors told CPS that the child's injuries were not consistent with the explanation his mother gave.
"We didn't find anything consistent with a dog attacking this baby," said Olguin. "We don't know what caused the injuries, but we do know that something or someone did it."
The mother lives with the child's father who, she said, was at work at the time.
HPD Investigators say the father is cooperating, but the mother is not.
They say their investigation is also hindered because they were notified a day late. CPS initially thought it was a Webster case and didn't call HPD.
So far, no charges have been filed.
CPS now has emergency custody of the baby as they are investigating.
The chilling story came as a total surprise to neighbors at the Huntley apartments.
"I think it's really sad," said Whitney Rogers. "It's really disturbing that something like that would happen."
The Dachsund is in the custody of animal control.
