There is no question Sandra Rice’s house was the target of an overnight shooting. What isn’t clear is why.
“There was a gunshot right here … one through this window,” Rice said. “Just bang-bang-bang and it was so close my husband thought it came from the ceiling.”
The loud shots sent the couple scrambling immediately out of bed. At first glance they thought the bullets just damaged their home. But then they looked again.
“When we cut the lights on that’s when I seen that my grandson was shot, he was bleeding,” Rice said.
Paul Tucker was hit. He was asleep on the floor and never saw the bullets coming.
“It went through his leg while he was lying down, and the bullet penetrated to the vascular arteries,” Tucker’s uncle, Melvin Hayward, said.
The damage was so severe, doctors at LBJ hospital could do little to help him. 11 News was there as the seventh-grader was flown to Memorial Hermann in a last-ditch attempt to save his life.
Tucker’s family has been living in the neighborhood for over 20 years. They say they will occasionally hear a gunshot or two, but never before has the gun been pointed at them.
But now, their lives have been turned upside down in what they believe was a senseless shooting.
Tucker is in critical condition.
Police have no suspects in this case, and they are seeking the public’s help.
