Houston gets more red light safety cameras

05:40 PM CST on Monday, November 13, 2006

You’re being photographed more on the road so say "Cheese".

That’s because 10 new red light cameras have gone up and they're being monitored live.

At Chimney Rock and the Southwest Freeway service road, there’s a new spy in the sky.

“I think it’s good, that people will drive safely,” said driver Ed Cabatingan.

‘We wasn’t just crying ‘wolf’. We’ve got a serious problem out there,” said HPD Sgt. Michael Muench.

Some say it’s normally the case to see the red lights going through the intersection after the lights have changed.

“You see people blatantly run the red lights after what seems like two or three seconds past red and they’re still going through,” said driver Mike Mukhar.

The red light safety cameras are operating at the following locations:

•East Freeway westbound service road at Uvalde

•Sam Houston parkway southbound service road at Beechnut

•Bissonnet westbound at West Sam Houston parkway South service road

•Hillcroft southeast bound at Southwest Freeway service road

•FM 1960 West westbound at Tomball Parkway service road

•Chimney Rock southbound at Southwest Freeway service road

•S. Gessner southbound at Beechnut

•Southwest Freeway northbound service road at Fountain View

•Westheimer eastbound at West Loop South service road

•Westpark eastbound at Southwest Freeway service road

The sites were chosen because, officials said, they are high accident locations.

It’s hoped the cameras will help the Houston Police Department in managing poor driving habits.

“There will be a warning sign notifying drivers that they are approaching an intersection that is being photo enforced,” said Sgt. Michael Muench with the Houston Police Department.

The first 10 red light cameras went up Sept. 1.

Since then 3,000 violators have been recorded.
