Homicide detectives now say a mother who claimed she woke up to find her daughter dead is actually the one who killed her.

Rohina Abdul Ali was 22 years old.

They say Najia Omar Mohamad repeatedly bludgeoned her daughter in the head with a sledgehammer.

She was arrested Thursday and charged with murder.

Omar claimed she woke up to find Rohina Abdul Ali, 22, dead in her bed Saturday morning.

"She couldn't remember anything since she was taking sleeping pills, and she was asleep," an interpreter after the young woman's body was found.

Police say the motive for the killing is unknown.

The victim's 4-year-old daughter remains in CPS custody.

The family lived together at a southwest Houston apartment complex in the 8700 block of Gustine.

Like thousands of others before her, Ali fled her native country of Afghanistan in search of a brighter future.

"They wanted a better life, that's why they came to the United States," her mother said through an interpreter before she was charged.

She said moving to America was the family's only solution to surviving a war-torn country.
