City wants to cancel annual Veteran's Day parade

Every year in November, a day is set aside to honor U.S. military men and women.

We know it as Veteran’s Day.

For those who risked their lives, defended our country, and who returned from duty broken there is nothing else quite like being swept along the city streets in a Veterans Day Parade.

Veterans upset over city plans to replace Veteran's Day parade with a ceremony.

The bands, banners and cheers, it’s enough to send chills down your spine unless you’re David Fowler.

He’s paralyzed from the neck down.

But even then, he feels pride.

“The feeling is indescribable. You feel so proud and so happy,” said Fowler.

So you can guess how Fowler felt Monday when he was told the parade would likely be replaced by a ceremony at the Veterans Cemetery.

“I’m kind of questioning and dismayed there won’t be a parade,” said Fowler.

Susan Christian, the mayor’s coordinator, said when the parade’s on a Saturday, as it will be this year, the participation falls off the table.

“What our experience tells us is that we get triple or quadruple the number of participants in a parade on a weekday, opposed to a weekend,” said Christian.

The same goes for the crowds.

“It’s much less on a weekend, rather than a weekday,” said Christian.

Some vets are embarrassed by the fact that so few Americans are willing to give up even an hour or two of their Saturday morning to honor veterans.

They wonder if that doesn’t say America is populated with Monday-through-Friday patriots.

They plan to be back, marching down city streets three years from now, when Veterans Day is on Monday again.

But David Fowler believes they shouldn’t give up on the weekends. “I think they might surprise themselves.”

Maybe Americans are weekend patriots, as well.

A final decision is expected next week.

But it’s not just city officials who will make that choice.

A number of veterans groups are also involved and no one wants an embarrassingly poor turnout.
