Students demand cheaper birth control
12:52 PM CST on Wednesday, November 14, 2007
Students at the University of Houston gathered with a demand Wednesday: cheaper birth control pills.
The students set up a table on campus where they passed out literature and ramen noodles.
The noodles were included because $35 worth of the snack can feed them for a month – the same price they’re now paying for birth control.
They used to pay $10.
The price change is all because of a technicality in the law under new federal legislation.
“Of course, birth control, we feel that it is a right for every young to be able to protect herself from unintended pregnancy. At Planned Parenthood, we believe a woman should be able to live and love the way she wants to, and affordable birth control just makes sense. It makes sense to prevent unintended pregnancies on college campuses so that women can be successful,” Planned Parenthood’s Meggin Baxter said.
The students are urging Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison to rewrite the legislation.
“We think that is a pretty mainstream, common sense idea that we hope Senator Hutchison supports,” Baxter said.
