11:05 AM CDT on Saturday, September 20, 2008

HOUSTON—The Greater Houston area has overcome a lot since Hurricane Ike roared ashore, but there is much to be done along the road to recovery.

On Saturday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m., 11 News will air a three-hour special on the hurricane, the aftermath and what’s being done to help Southeast Texas recover.

“Overcoming Ike” will be hosted by Greg Hurst, Lucy Noland, Len Cannon and Deborah Duncan.

The special will be streamed live on KHOU.com from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., and our team will be on hand to answer your questions during the show. All you need to do is send an e-mail with your query to ike@khou.com with “OVERCOMING IKE QUESTION” in the subject line.

For many residents who’ve been without power since the storm, “Overcoming Ike” may be the first opportunity to see how the hurricane affected the region.

“Overcoming Ike” will take you through the storm as the events unfolded—from the early evacuations, to the night of the hurricane, to the long days that followed.

Viewers will then have the chance to get involved in live Town Hall Meetings in both Galveston and Houston, hosted by 11 News anchors.

A panel of speakers will be available in both locations to answer questions and cover the topics that are currently top-of-mind for concerned Gulf Coast residents.

Panel members at the meetings will include Bob Tippee, editor of the Oil & Gas Journal; Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee; Alvin Wright of Public Works; Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas; Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough; staff members from the Houston Dept. of Health and Human Services, FEMA representatives; Harris County Judge Ed Emmett; Floyd LeBlanc of CenterPoint energy, HPD Chief Harold Hurtt; Houston Mayor Bill White and insurance experts, among others.

The panels will discuss power outages, shelters, FEMA aid, home repair, insurance, PODs, reconstructing damaged areas and when residents can return to their homes.  They will also field questions from viewers and audience members.  Some of those questions will be selected from e-mails sent to ike@khou.com.

This Saturday, join 11 News and KHOU.com for “Overcoming Ike.”  We stood by you through the storm, and we will be there for the duration of the journey to recovery.
