HOUSTON -- At SportsTalk 790, sports fans were talking Johnny Manziel and his now infamous middle finger.
"It's like watching Nascar, I can't wait for the wreck," said one caller.
On the Monday Night Football national stage, Manziel's game didn't rise to the occasion, but his middle finger sure did.
"I thought to myself, did he just flip that bench off," said fan James Small.
Manziel reacted to taunting from the Redskins bench.
"The cameras were probably right on me," Manziel said. "I need to be smarter about that."
The finger caught even die hard Manziel lovers off guard.
"It's kind of like a little circus that keeps going," said fan Nicholas Tabue.
It also gave Manziel haters another reason to hate the former Aggie quarterback.
"I think he needs to grow up a bit," said Candice Limas. "He's not in college football anymore."
Manziel did score a touchdown, his first one in the NFL, but analysts say his play was sloppy.
"He sucked," said Matt Thomas, a host with SportsTalk 790.
What little good he did do on the field was long forgotten by morning. Overnight, he went from being known as "Johnny Football" to "Johnny Middle Finger."
So the gift that keeps on giving to sports talk radio has fans here in Houston shaking their heads and dialing in, but not quite ready to give up on Manziel just yet.
"He's going to be a great quarterback," said Small. "The question is how long will it take."
The larger question now is can Manziel flip the switch on this bumpy start, before he flips the bird again.
