CANTON, Ohio – There was one Hall of Famer here who didn't make the official walk down the gold carpet and onto the stage at the annual Gold Jacket Ceremony.

John Madden waited to make his entrance.

The lights dimmed inside the Canton Civic Center as the highlight reel for former Raiders punter Ray Guy rolled. In the shadows, Madden, wearing his own gold jacket, made his way onto the stage.

Madden's appearances at NFL events have been rare since he retired from broadcasting in 2009. He didn't even speak here Friday night, but he will on Saturday when he serves as Guy's presenter at the Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony.

All Madden, Guy's coach on the Oakland Raiders from 1973-1978, had to do Friday night was slip the gold jacket over Guy's shoulders. The men shared a hug, and then Madden was gone, leaving Guy, the first punter (and only the second kicker) to be voted into the Hall of Fame, to enjoy a standing ovation.
