HOUSTON - The Houston Astros have traded right handed pitcher Jarred Cosart to the Miami Marlins in a 6-player deal.
In addition to sending Cosart to Miami, the Astros also traded infielder Enrique "Kike" Hernandez and outfielder Austin Waites. In return, Houston receives OF Jake Marisnick, RHP Frances Martes, IF Colin Moran and a compensatory pick.
Cosart, who is from League City, joined the Astros organization as part of the Hunter Pence trade back in 2011.
This season, Cosart is 9-7 with a 4.41 ERA and 75 strikeouts. He was scheduled to pitch Thursday night against the Toronto Blue Jays but learned of the trade as the team was heading out for pre-game warm-ups.
Cosart and Hernandez said goodbye to their Astros teammates on the field.
As for the players coming to Houston, Marsinick will report to the Astros immediately. He played 14 games this season with the Marlins having spent the majority of his 2014 campaign with Triple A New Orleans. Marisnick hit .277 with 16 doubles, 10 home runs, 40 RBI and 24 stolen bases while in the minor leagues.
Martes, 18, owns a 2-2 record in eight games (six starts) for the Gulf Coast League Marlins this season. He has recorded 33 strikeouts in his 33.0 innings pitched in 2014.
Moran, 21, has hit .294 (106x361) with 21 doubles, five home runs and 33 RBI for Class A Jupiter this season. He was ranked as the Marlins No. 3 prospect according to MLB.com. He will report to Double-A Corpus Christi.
