Texas A&M has taken the first step toward replacing Johnny Manziel.
The Aggies named sophomore Kenny Hill their starting quarterback on Saturday, announcing the decision on Twitter and Instagram.
Hill beat out true freshman Kyle Allen in a race that Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin had called "dead even" earlier in the week. The Southlake, Texas, native was the Texas Gatorade Player of the Year in 2012 as a senior in high school.
Hill completed 16 of 22 passes for 183 yards in relief of Manziel as a true freshman.
Texas A&M opens its season Aug. 28 at South Carolina.
