DALLAS -- A 5-year-old girl found murdered in a vacant apartment last weekend will be laid to rest Friday.

In an obituary posted by the Restland Funeral Home, services for Katherine Gonzalez will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel at the funeral home, located at 13005 Greenville Avenue. A visitation was held Thursday evening.

On Sunday, Aug. 31, Gonzalez disappeared while playing at the Sontera Palms Apartments on Royal Lane in Lake Highlands. She was being watched by her uncle while her parents were working.

Her body was found a short time later in a vacant apartment, "hanging in a closet by a shirt around her neck," an arrest warrant stated.

Gonzalez' 17-year-old cousin, Angel Sanches, has been charged with the crime, but he is telling police that another man named "Carlos" is responsible for the murder.

Police are investigating DNA found at the scene and have charged Sanches with capital murder. He's not eligible for the death penalty because he's 17. His bond has been set at $1 million.
