LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas -- A 3-year old boy died Wednesday night after he was kicked by his family's horse at their Liberty County home.
Deputies said the incident occurred around 8 p.m. in the 1100 block of County Road 6479.
The toddler, identified as Colton Lee Clegg, had been helping his father and uncle unload a bag of feed from a truck. When they took it to one of the family's two horses, deputies say the horse kicked the bag and spilled it.
Trying to help, the boy began to pick up the feed. When his uncle told him to stop, they say the boy threw up his hands in the air.
Investigators say that action may have spooked the horse and caused it to kick the boy in the upper chest.
The family, which lives in a rural area, took the injured child to meet an ambulance at a nearby grocery store. Life Flight transported the boy to Memorial Hermann in Houston where doctors worked for nearly an hour to try to save him.
