HEDWIG VILLAGE, Texas -- An officer west of Houston shot and killed a suspect who allegedly fired several shots following a brief chase late Monday.
The police chief at the Hedwig Village Police Department said it was around 11:30 p.m. when an officer tried to pull over a driver for an illegal turn along the Katy Freeway frontage road.
One person bailed from the vehicle before the driver took off. The officer chased the suspect's vehicle, which eventually hit a curb on Voss.
According to police, the suspect got out and at first appeared to surrender, but then he pulled a gun from his waistband and fired at least six shots. The officer returned fire, shooting the suspect several times.
The suspect allegedly tried to fight off paramedics, but he was taken to the hospital where he later died.
The officer was not hurt, although one of the suspect's bullets when through his pants.
The killed suspect was not identified, and the suspect who first bailed from the vehicle got away, police said.
The officer involved, Andra Gibson, is a three-year veteran of the Hedwig Village police force and the department's chaplain, the chief said.
