HOUSTON - A birthday party for a teenager turned deadly when an unknown suspect walked by and began firing shots into the house.
"Everybody was basically diving on the floor," said witness Karrysha Turner.
Houston Police Department responded to Hiram Springs early Sunday morning. At some point during the party, a suspect walked by in the street carrying an AR-15 style rifle and opened fire on the house, fatally striking 24-year-old Dixie Mendez.
"She was the innocent bystander," said her friend Britany Mathis. "The bullet came through the wall, and now she's gone. She's the one that ended up dead."
Mendez was sleeping in a back bedroom when the shots were fired and was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck in the head. Friends say she had just learned she was pregnant days earlier.
"I went in and called her name, and I saw her head move," said Turner. "So I called her name again, and she didn't say anything. So I tried moving the covers, that's when I saw the blood, and I just freaked out. For me to see her take her last breath hurts."
Mendez's family is still in shock. Her father Juan Antonio Mendez arrived at the scene. He says Dixie was his only daughter and can't understand how this happened.
The suspect then walked across Hiram Clarke and fired at another house before disappearing.
Police were at the scene investigating for close to 8 hours. Police found shell casings in the backyard, large bullet holes on the side of the home, on cars and on the bed frame.
No official statement from Houston Police has been released.
"If anyone knows anything, please come forward, please help us find her murderer," said Mathis.
