FRIENDSWOOD, Texas -- Customers and employees helped a 72-year-old victim after her purse was snatched in a grocery store parking lot.

It happened on Tuesday afternoon at the HEB at 701 W. Parkwood Avenue in Friendswood.

The woman left her purse in the shopping cart as she was loading groceries in her car and someone stole it.

The woman yelled for help and that's when customers and employees ran to her aid.

One customer managed to hold the suspect down until police got there but not before tossing the purse in the getaway car.

The getaway driver took off even as a female customer tried to reach in and grab the purse. She didn't retrieve it and was hit by the passenger side door.

Customers did manage to get the license plate number.

The suspected purse snatcher was arrested at the scene.

Friendswood Police say he's 33-year old Ray Patterson Jr. from League City.

With the plate number and a purchase made with one of the stolen cards, Friendswood Police were able to nab the getaway driver.

24-year old Emmanuel Harris of Texas City was arrested at the Coopers Mill Apartments in the 15600 block of the Gulf Freeway.

A spokesperson with HEB said that the customer who held the suspect was given a $50 dollar gift card.

Customers at the store were pleased to hear about the teamwork.

"I love it," said customer Amanda Tschelp. "I'm glad to see there's people out there willing to help others. You don't see that very often."
