HOUSTON – A bullet-proof vest saved a Houston police officer during a shooting that left one suspect dead in north Houston, police said.

It happened around 2:40 p.m. in the 11960 block of Airline Drive.

That is where two Houston police officers responded to a report about a suspicious person with a weapon. There was a physical altercation and the suspect shot the officer and the officer returned fire, police said.

Police said the bullet hit the officer in the torso, which was covered by his protective vest. The officer was transported by ground ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Medical Center. He was alert and speaking to investigators.

The officer was identified as John Calhoun, 28, who has been with the Houston Police Department for six years and is assigned to the North Patrol Division.

The suspect, who was also hit, was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.
