HOUSTON – Authorities are asking for the public's help in identifying a person of interest in a shooting that left one man dead and a woman wounded Friday night near the North Loop.
According to the Houston Police Department, it happened around 11:20 p.m. near Ella when a minivan suddenly drove off the road and crashed.
A passer-by went to check on the two people in the van and realized they had both been shot.
Investigators said, prior to the accident, the pair had tried to drive away from a drug deal that went bad. Then a group of unknown suspects followed them and fired several shots at their vehicle. Police said Jawanza Rooker, 20, of Houston, suffered a gunshot wound to the back and was pronounced dead at the scene. The wounded woman, 19, was transported to an area hospital and later released.
Rooker lost control of the vehicle and drove off the road into a grass median, police said.
The individual wanted for questioning is described only as a Hispanic male with a slim build and black spiky hair, police said.
He has tattoos of an oil derrick (the former Houston Oilers logo) on his right forearm and a bull with horns (like the Houston Texans logo) on his left shoulder.
Police said he was wearing a red T-shirt with "Hollister 22" on the front.
Anyone with information on his identity or whereabouts is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
