HOUSTON – Authorities are searching for two male suspects after a well-known music performer was shot during a carjacking Thursday night in north Houston.
According to the Houston Police Department, it happened just before 9:30 p.m. outside a home in the 9600 block of Mona Street.
Investigators said that at that time 59-year-old Donald Glenn and his girlfriend had just returned home from grocery shopping and were sitting in their vehicle, listening to music.
Glenn is known as "Jabo" and is often referred to as the "Texas Prince of Zydeco."
While they were in their vehicle, a truck pulled up and blocked the driveway, police said. Two male suspects jumped out and began walking towards the Glenn's vehicle.
That is when his girlfriend realized that the suspects had guns, and the couple then proceeded to exit the car with their hands up, police said.
Then one of the suspect demanded that they give him the keys to the vehicle, police said. As Glenn victim tried to walk away, one of the suspects shot him in the back.
Glenn was able to make it a few doors down to his parent's house, where his mother called for an ambulance.
His girlfriend was able to get away and only sustained a minor injury, police said.
According to family, the singer and his girlfriend were followed home by the suspects from the grocery store.
The suspects took off with her purse, a cell phone and their 2001 grey-colored Acura MDX with the license plate DRF7648.
Glenn was taken to Ben Taub Hospital where he is now undergoing emergency surgery.
"All I can do is pray, and give it to God and I know God will work it out, he'll alright," Wanda Towers, Glenn's mother, said.
Glenn has been performing since age 6 – his parents say he was looking forward to attending a big awards show in California.
They're hoping and praying they'll be able to watch him perform again.
"Oh he's gonna play again, he gonna probably be trying to play when he get out of the hospital. I'm gonna probably have to hold him down. He gonna have the accordion in the bed with him," Towers said.
