PORTLAND, Maine – Animal lovers are outraged at what they call a slap on the wrist for two teenage girls who abused a kitten.

The 15-year-old girls recorded themselves putting a kitten in a microwave then turning it on. The cat survived, but the video quickly went viral. The girls were charged with felony animal cruelty.

They've made a deal with prosecutors to each serve 100 hours of community service. Many believe the punishment is too lenient.

One animal rights group said the girls should've been required to get counseling or be banned from owning pets.

Officials said the kitten is with a new family and doing well.
