HOUSTON Andre Johnson is back with the Houston Texans. He reported to training camp just weeks after he skipped off-season workouts and vowed to sit out camp until traded.
No. 80 s return made teammates smile.
We re all excited for him to be here, said cornerback Kareem Jackson. We re looking forward to doing some good things this year.
Last year, two wins and 14 losses nearly pushed Johnson off the Texans. He wanted out Houston so bad that he skipped mandatory workouts to prove his point. He felt fans had his back.
I think if anything was said negative, I never got wind of it, Johnson said. It was a lot of positive things. People said they re praying for me and things like that. You know, they understand the way I felt.
Johnson would not give specifics, but told reporters his concerns about returning to the team were bigger than one bad season or who plays quarterback. He and Texans management talked out their problems. Now, he s all in.
This staff that s come in, they ve brought a winning attitude, Johnson said. They make you feel like you can go out and do that. So, they re giving us the confidence if we go out and do what we re supposed to do, we ll be successful.
Teammates showed no ill will. In fact, they welcomed Johnson back with a standing ovation.
(It s) always good to see (Andre) in the building, said tight end Garrett Graham. Just like anyone else, he s ready to go.
All of that was Andre s business, you know, and upstairs (with management), said quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. So they were dealing through all of that.
We re all excited to have him back, said offensive tackle Duane Brown. He s been my teammate my whole time here and I guy I really look up to as a professional.
For his part, No. 80 just wants to get back to work for Houston for the rest of his career.
Johnson said he wants to retire a member of the Texans.
