HEIGHTS, Texas -- A Heights neighborhood is on alert after an intruder made a daring move with a mother and toddler inside a home.

It happened Tuesday afternoon in the 900 block of Lawrence Street.

The mother said she was upstairs with her child when she heard the alarm sounding. She reportedly ran downstairs and came face to face with the criminal inside her home.

She apparently yelled at him and he ran out the door, leaving her shaken but unharmed.

Neighbors said the alarm crime fits into a pattern of activity that s been plaguing the neighborhood.

We re afraid to go out after dark a little bit, and we have a dog. So walking the dog in the evening is something I question doing alone, said neighbor Beezie Sayers.

Beezie and Hanley Sayers just had their car broken into in the overnight hours. The thief took electronics but left golf clubs and tennis racquets.

You feel violated. Somebody s gone through your stuff and you have to call someone to fix your windows. It s an inconvenience more than anything but makes you think about being extra careful, said Hanley Sayers.

The Sayers are among the many parents raising young children on the block.

It does make me think of getting myself a handgun and practicing, having that as a back-up, said neighbor Mandy Drake, mother of a 9-month-old baby girl.

A number of families met on Monday night to get acquainted with one another.

I think it s part of cultivating community and what makes me feel a little bit more safe, said neighbor Lisa Eubanks.

The intruder that struck on Tuesday afternoon reportedly darted out of the home and jumped over a fence. He vanished before police arrived.

He was wearing a blue t-shirt and a red cap and is believed to be in his 20s.
