HARRIS COUNTY, Texas Harris County deputies announced Wednesday an alleged serial rapist was behind bars following a tip sent in to authorities.

Charles Devenport, 25, is charged with sexual assault and is in jail on $250,000 bond. Officials saidthey believe he is connected to several rapes, but for now he s only being charged in one.

All of the attacksoccurred at or near an apartment complex on Cypress Station Drive on the county s north side.

The sheriff s office said DNA evidence connected Devenport to five victims, and officialswarned he may have had a female accomplice who is not yet in custody.

Investigators say Devenport s victims were escorts he met online. He would ask them to meet him at an abandoned apartment where he would beat and rape them.

One of the victims couldn t find the apartment so she called Devenport.

It was a woman who answered the phone. That woman directed the victim to the paws of this predator, said Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia.

Very surprised that a woman would be helping him. What does she have to gain? We are very interested to find who that woman is, said HCSO Lt. Ruben Diaz.

Devenport'sarrest comes after a sheriff's office billboard featuredhis suspect sketch, officials said. A female teenager recognized Devenport and called Crime Stoppers.

Devenport was arrested at his cousin s house.

They pretty much just came in and just yelling and asking if he was here, said Aramica Thompson, the suspect s cousin. And I let them see he was here and they were just yelling and hollering and screaming.

I want to thank the community for help in arresting Devenport, said Garcia. He's accused of seven rapes.

The sheriffwent on to say the suspect's dad provided DNA evidence in the case.

Records show the suspect previously had only misdemeanor arrests and no felonies.

Devenport's first court date was set for Thursday.

Anyone with information about a possible accomplice in this case is asked to call the sheriff's office at 713-222-TIPS.
