HOUSTON - Police said an investigation was underway into what caused a man to speed out of a gas station parking lot and crash into a concrete pole, killing him.

It happened near a Shell gas station along the North Loop at W. TC Jester Boulevard shortly before midnight Monday, Houston police said.

A clerk said the driver of the white late-model Dodge Challenger sped out of the gas station s parking lot. It then hit a concrete pillar under the North Loop. Police said the driver was killed instantly.

The Houston Police Department closed the freeway s westbound frontage road and both directions of TC Jester during the investigation and cleanup.
