HOUSTON High winds caused all outdoor rodeo activities to be shut down Monday night at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

At about 9 p.m., carnival and rodeo officials made the decision to close up shop and announced their plan inside to concert attendees at Reliant.

Ben Pickett with RCS, the carnival operators, said they have been watching the weather all day.

Each ride is set differently by the manufacturer on safe operating conditions, said Pickett. We constantly monitor the weather.

Carnival visitors battled the wind as long as they could, but found themselves limited on the rides.

We tried to ride the roller coaster and they shut it down, said Michael Atcheson. Instead, I got on the one that scared me really bad.

By 9:30 p.m., the lights inside the midway were off.
