GALVESTON, Texas The detailed lists of school supplies Galveston Independent School District teachers requested for the 2012-13 school year feature teacher-only office supplies that were not included in lists from previous years.
Elementary school students do not spend much time making copies or refilling office printers when paper runs low, but many of them are required to drag two reams of white printer paper with them on the first day of school.
Middle and high school students also are expected to stock the school office with supplies like dry-erase markers and batteries.
In the past, those items only would be classroom staples like facial tissues and bottles of glue. But this year, the district had to trim about $2.7 million from its annual budget of $62 million and will face an additional $4.4 million budget cut in 2013.
