HOUSTON The college football season hasn t even started yet and the Texas A&M Aggies are already winning.
No, I m not talking about them moving to the SEC. Actually that probably doesn t involve much winning at all, I mean, unless you re referring to the pocket books.
But while the schools imminent move to the SEC continues to be the main topic of conversation in College Station, their attention should be focused elsewhere. Instead of talking about the teams future conference, Aggieland may be better suited talking about some of their soon to be residents.
Three of the best heading that way call Houston home...for now.
On Thursday, the obsession known as high school football kicked off again. Many seniors have already decided where they re going to school and that includes some of the best players the city has to offer.
Klein Forest quarterback Matt Davis, Spring DeKaney running back Trey Williams and Fort Bend Hightower quarterback Bralon Addison will soon don the Maroon and White...but they were golden during the first weekend of action on the gridiron.
Here is what each did in their respective season openers:
QB Matt Davis: 15-27, 255 yds, TD ; 27 carries, 176 yds, 2 TD in 32-17 win vs. Cinco Ranch
RB Trey Williams: 12 carries, 149 yds, 4 TD (51, 3, 78, 15 yards) in 60-6 win over FB Marshall (did not play 2nd half)
QB Bralon Addison: 10-19, 209 yds, 3 TD ; 10 carries, 87 yards, 2 TD in 42-41 loss to Eisenhower
I have never been one for giving much credit to recruiting news and classes and such, but when you have three of the most dynamic playmakers in the state going to one school...and they do what they did ALL in one weekend...you have to pay attention.
I don t know whether Matt and Bralon will both be quarterbacks with the Aggies (probably not) but head coach Mike Sherman has a lot of options. If anyone ever questioned whether or not he would get Texas A&M back on the right track...those people I think are being proved wrong.
If one was to have an immediate impact next year it will probably be Williams. Current running back Cyrus Gray is a senior and who knows whether Christine Michael will stay for his final season. Trey should fit in nicely.
Matt and Bralon, depending on where they get slotted, could take some time to develop, but considering that 3 freshmen are behind senior quarterback Ryan Tannehill on the depth chart, I say anything is possible at this point.
There is no question 2011 is the year to get things done for the Aggies; plenty of experience on both sides of the ball. However, if A&M is worried about where the team will go from there...I think things will be just fine.
They might be in high school, but all these guys know this is only the beginning.
It should be a fun season for Aggies, both in College Station and here in Houston.
By the way, Matt Davis and his Eagles meet up with Trey Williams and his Wildcats on October 28...awesome...
