KINGWOOD, Texas -- The Kingwood community has rallied around a mother who is fighting for her life.
Katy Hayes gave birth to her third child, Arielle, at home 10 weeks ago.
She had a midwife, was very healthy through her entire pregnancy, working and exercising up until she had the baby, says Michelle Dykstra, a family friend.
Soon after, friends say, she started feeling pain but delayed going to the emergency room for four days. In the end, Katy suffered multiple organ failure and all fourlimbs had to be amputated because of a streptococcal A infection. She's currently fighting for her life in a special unit at a Dallas hospital.
Katy and her husband, Al, also have a 6-year-old and 16-year-old.
Friends and strangers are helping with childcare, cookingmeals and raising moneyfor the family as they struggle to cope with the unexpected tragedy.
At the Kingwood Country Club,a tennis fund raiserserved as testament to the kindness of strangers.
I didn't know Katy, says event organizer Tanya Robinson, but her story touched me and I had to do more.
Courtside for Katy raised $12,500. A Facebook page has also been set up to help the family.
She has a great laugh, a quick smile, a warm touch and a love for animals, said friends who launched the Facebook page. She has a gift for healing and cares deeply for others.
