HOUSTON - Several homes were destroyed or damaged in an overnight fire that was so intense, it also burned cars parked nearby.

According to the Houston Fire Department, the blaze was reported shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday on Anita Street at Live Oak Street in Third Ward.

It's believed the fire started in a one-story home and then spread to two nearby two-story homes that were converted into apartment units.

The home was destroyed along with one of the apartment buildings. The other apartment building was damaged.

In all, about a dozen people were temporarily displaced by the fire, but no injuries were reported.

Several of the residents jumped into action, moving their vehicles as the fire started. Another person reportedly went door-to-door waking everyone up.

I was concerned it was going to spread and burn the rest of the block up, one neighbor told KHOU 11 News. The firemen, they took care of it.

It was so hot me and my roommate, we started backing our cars up. He parked in the church parking lot. That s how my friend s car caught on fire he couldn t even move it because of the fire truck. He couldn t get around it, another witness said.

A couple of vehicles were damaged, and one was completely destroyed.

HFD said a cause for the fire is under investigation. Arson investigators said the home where the fire started is allegedly known for drug activity.
