BAYTOWN, Texas A man violently shook and abused his girlfriend s 5-month-old, killing the baby girl, according to the Baytown Police Department.
Keydrin Denzel Arceneaux, 30, was charged with felony murder.
The baby was not Arceneaux s biological child, but he began dating the mother while she was pregnant with her. The couple had been dating for a year, and the mother and her two children had been living with Arceneaux and his parents for about six months.
Arceneaux was often alone with the child, and even before the baby was killed, some people witnessed disturbingly rough behavior he exhibited toward the child, according to documents.
Arceneaux said the night before the baby died, her mother had taken her to the hospital because of a possible eye infection. When mommy and daughter returned home around 4 a.m. on January 9, Arceneaux took the baby because his girlfriend was tired.
Arceneaux said he fed and burped the baby only, but did not do anything to harm her. He said nothing appeared to be wrong when he put the baby to bed.
The mother agreed that Arceneaux took the baby from her when she arrived home in the early-morning hours. She said later on, he woke her up to tell her that he was heading to school. When the girlfriend went to check on her baby, she found her cold and unresponsive in her bassinet. She screamed for Arceneaux s stepmother to come help her and called 911.
The girlfriend also called Arceneaux back to the apartment and they attempted to perform CPR on the baby until paramedics arrived. The baby was then transported to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
In March of 2014, detectives received the full autopsy report which revealed the baby s cause of death.
An autopsy revealed the baby suffered blunt force trauma to the left side of her temple, resulting in hemorrhaging. In addition, doctors found hemorrhaging in the spinal cord, rib fractures and contusions of the upper right arm and elbow. The death was ruled a homicide.
Investigators were notified by representatives of Harris County Children s Protective Services that there was an open cased involving Arceneaux and the baby girl. Workers at the baby s daycare reported him, saying they saw Arceneaux violently shaking the baby sometime in October 2013. They said while he was carrying the baby into the center, he was shaking her from side to side and yelling Wake up!
They then saw him almost drop the baby, catching her by one leg. At that point, they took the baby away from him and threatened to call 911. The workers then called CPS, investigators said.
During an interview, the mother also said she saw Arceneaux being rough with her baby. She said about two weeks before the baby died, Arceneaux was putting the baby down for a nap. As she was watching through a crack in the door, the mother allegedly saw Arceneaux jab the baby suddenly, causing her to cry out. The mom said she rushed out of the room and took her baby from him.
Arceneaux denied these allegations during his first interview. He admitted that he did take the baby to give the mother a rest the night before she died, but denied shaking her violently.
On April 11, 2014 a second interview was conducted with Arceneaux. Arceneaux then admitted to shaking the baby which ultimately was enough evidence in the Harris County District Attorney s opinion in filing murder charges on him.
On Friday April 18, 2014Arceneuax was arrested in Atascocita, Texas and is currently in the Harris County Jail with no bond.
