HOUSTON An elderly woman was taken to the hospital early Saturday after a fire broke out at her senior living community in northwest Harris County, according to fire officials.

Firefighters from the Northwest Fire Department arrived to find flames coming from the second floor balcony of a unit at the Primrose at Heritage Park Senior Living Apartments on Old Bammel North Houston at Fallbrook around 12:30 a.m. They made a fast attack and managed to get the fire under control, but several apartments were damaged.

Two units were affected by fire and four or five units were affected by smoke and water damage.

The woman who lived in the apartment where the fire began suffered smoke inhalation and other medical problems. She was transported to the hospital in stable condition.

Some residents were confused when the fire started.

I wasn t sure if it was a fire or not so I kind of scrambled around in the house but then I came and saw some other ladies in the hallway and I said, I better get out of the building, Berniece Hamilton said.

Firefighters found that the complex did have working sprinklers.

We got a lot of water coming out of the sprinkler system but it did not knock the fire out, said Northwest Fire Dept. Assistant Chief, Ang Nguyen.

The official cause of the fire, which appears to have started in a storage closet on the balcony, is under investigation.
