HOUSTON After falling 39 votes shy of being a first-ballot hall of famer in 2013, Craig Biggio has taken a different approach to his second time on the ballot.

I followed it a little more last year the first time on the ballot but I learn that you don t really control it, Biggio said. When you re playing the game, you have control of your at bats but this, you can t control. You re just hoping you get a call.

But until Cooperstown calls, the Astros great is making sure to stay active.

You try to keep your mind and your life busy. I think if you sit around you have the tendency of reading about it, looking it up on the internet. Just probably the last couple of days you cross your fingers and hope it happen for all the right reasons.

Biggio s career speaks for itself. A .281 career average, 291 homeruns, 3,060 hits, 414 stolen bases and 1,175 runs batted in. He was a 7-time All Star (one year as a catcher) and 4-time Gold Glove winner.

In 2013, Biggio ranked first among eligible players on the Hall of Fame ballot getting 68.2% of the vote. This year, other notable players like Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas join the list of hopefuls, adding to what Biggio believes is an already crowded group.

I had three generations of guys I competed with and my generation was really, really talented, Biggio said. There are so many deserving candidates. It s hard and it s a different process so it ll be interesting.

What he did individually hasn t been matched by many since, but what the Astros legend is most proud of is what this induction would mean for an organization and city which mean the world to him.

I would be excited for it, for all the guys that played in the organization, Biggio said. There are so many great players that have played here and put on the Astros uniform. It would be an amazing feeling.

Biggio would be the first Houston Astros player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

I dedicated my whole life to this city, this organization so it would be special. It would be magical.

The Hall of Fame announcement is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is in July.
