HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Officials at Sam Houston State University said early Wednesday a threatening social media post was later determined to be a hoax.
A suspect has been identified in the social media post threat against SHSU, the school tweeted around 6:45 a.m. UPD has determined that the threat was a hoax.
Earlier in the morning, the school sent out a recorded phone message to parents, students, and staff warning them to be alert throughout the day.
We received information that a non-specific threat had been posted on social media, and because we take the safety of our students very seriously, and we consider all threats serious, we decided to alert the university community to be alert and be aware, school spokeswoman Julia May told KHOU 11 News. I would just say be aware of your surroundings.
If you see anything of suspicious nature, report it to our university police department.
May said the threat was vague and all classes would be held as scheduled on Wednesday.
University police posted the following message on the school s Facebook page:
SHSU Katsafe-A suspicious social media posting about SHSU is being investigated. Be alert. Report any unusual activities to UPD at 936.294.1794 or call 911.
