HOUSTON A worker found a man s body Friday in heaps of trash at a southwest Houston recycling center, Houston police said.

It happened at about 9:30 a.m. at the Westpark Consumer Recycling Center located at 5904 Westpark at Fountainview.

We have the crane operator inside the facility who is moving the trash around to the variety of areas before they compact it, said HPD Homicide Detective Phil Waters. He picks up about the third load and sees two arms hanging from the bottom of the part that he has picked up, puts it back on the ground.

The worker called police after realizing it was a dead body. Investigators think the man was homeless.

We believe that the body came in by virtue of a dumpster, that the person -- who has yet to be identified -- had crawled into last night when it got cold, Waters said.

He said he doesn t suspect foul play; and that it s not uncommon for homeless people to get killed after crawling into a dumpster for warmth.

Unfortunately, when the trucks come around to empty these dumpsters, there s so much noise, there s so much going on even if the person inside may wake up, I mean at least in what we ve found in the last three cases that they re just not heard once they re dumped into the back of the truck, Waters said.

An autopsy will determine the victim s cause of death.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600.
