SAN ANTONIO The mother of a suspected drunk driver says she warned police in the hours before he got behind the wheel of his car early Monday morning.
Monica Olveda said her son s bipolar behavior made for a sleepless night -- one where she asked police for help at least six times because of his actions towards his girlfriend and children.
Hernandez s longtime girlfriend Kimberly Rios said Hernandez s rage was fueled by alcohol and the prescription drug Xanax.
He was driving crazy. He was driving real crazy. I was scared. My kids were scared. I just begged and begged him to drop us off, Rios said.
San Antonio police reportedly answered six calls from Olveda, with the first call coming in just before 3 a.m. Three more calls were made in the 4 a.m. hour, followed by another call after 6 a.m. and then a final call only a half hour before the accident.
Seven people were taken to the hospital after the crash, including Hernandez.
Police said the 11-year-old died while en route to the hospital. His mother, two younger sister and 2-year-old brother. The driver of the minivan was also taken to the hospital.
Hernandez's own mother even said hedeserves to be locked up.
How could you not have arrested him when we're telling you we're in danger. He's threatening our lives, Olveda said. He's here, but he's not coherent.
But police said he wasn t there, at least he wasn't when officers arrived.
Rios said she feels a little guilty that she was able to escape the car that others could not.
Because I can see my kids every day. I can see him in a jail. They're not going to be able to see that little boy. And I'm so sorry, Rios said.
