HOUSTON -- The Harris County Mosquito Control is warning people about the chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne illness traditionally found in Africa and Asia.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans returning from cruises to the Caribbean or trips to Africa are coming home infected.

The virus causes fever and extreme joint pain for weeks. In rare cases it can be deadly, and there is no vaccine to treat it.

Testing for chikungunya started in Harris County this week, and there were no positive tests for people or pests.
