OLYMPIA, Wash -- A nurse in Clark County has been suspended due to accusations he had sexual contact with a young girl, according to the Washington State Department of Health.

Zachariah Merritt is accused of sexually abusing the girl while she was taking a nap, said Washington DOH spokesman Marqise Allen.

The incident allegedly took place last September in Brush Prairie, Wash.

Merritt afterward drove his camper to a remote area, turned on the propane stove inside, prepared to shoot himself with a handgun, and then ingested a bottle and a half of his wife's diltiazem, according to court documents.

He later said he tried kill himself because he inappropriately touched the girl and felt guilty, according to the statement of charges.

Merritt now faces charges of second-degree rape and first-degree incest in Clark County Superior Court.

The Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission suspended Allen's nursing license, as well as his medical technician and nursing assistant certified licenses, Allen said.

Merritt cannot practice in Washington until the charges are resolved, Allen said in a statement.
