HUMBLE, Texas A 54-year-old man who was boating with his children in Lake Houston early Saturday drowned after he fell into the water, according to officials with the Houston Fire Department.
HFD said that just before 10:30 a.m., emergency response crews were called for a water rescue near the 21300 block of Atascocita Place Drive.
An official with HFD said that Don Monday Jr. and his two sons were on a 16-foot boat out in the lake when they started to experience a mechanical issue with the watercraft. Monday lost control of the boat and it started to spin in circles at about 30 mph.
As the father tried to fix the mechanical issue, he fell into the lake. Officials said he was not wearing a life jacket.
Both children, ages 8 and 13, were wearing life jackets and were rescued by a passing boater, Thomas Madigan, who is a Houston firefighter.
We put a line on the boat and towed the two boys to shore, Madigan said.
They were taken in by family nearby as the children waited for their mother to arrive at the scene.
I turned the TV on and gave him something to drink and tried to distract him, Mary Seagraves, a good Samaritan, said. The older boy was very brave. The little one - every time he tried to tell me something - the little one, you can see the tears in his eyes.
Responders were able to retrieve Monday's body shortly after.
Monday was a father of eight. One of his daughters turned 18 on Saturday.
