HOUSTON - Friends, family, former players and former teammates showed up Sunday to honor former Houston Oilers coach Jack Pardee.

Pardee lost his fight with cancer last Monday, and the family held a visitation period and rosary Sunday afternoon.

Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews and former Oilers coach Eddie Biles were among those who showed up to pay their respects to a man many consider a true Texas sports hero.

Pardee burst onto the scene as an All-American player at Texas A&M. He later was an All-Pro linebacker in the NFL.

He finished his coaching career with the Oilers, but before that he coached in the World Football League and the United States Football League. He was also the head coach of the Chicago Bears for a short time and the University of Houston.

Many of his former players said that he had an influence on their lives like no other.
