THE WOODLANDS, Texas If you re perusing the magazines at a news stand, pick up the 2012 December issue of Popular Photography and flip to page 27. You ll see a portrait of local resident, Brent Shumaker, who won their Best Expressive Self-Portrait photo challenge.
A professional photographer, Shumaker wanted to capture the emotional turmoil of service members being deployed. His solemn self-portrait not only achieved his objective, but garnered top honors in the national magazine s photo challenge. The winning entry was a brilliant collaboration of lighting, camera angle, attention to detail, and emotion.
One of Shumaker s signature photographic techniques, his compositions are designed to emit emotion.
When you look at one of my images I want you to feel that emotion, said Shumaker.
Shumaker feels photography is more than aiming a camera...it s an art form.
Photography is combining light, composition, and color, into a photograph that is not only pleasing to the eye, but represents the subject in the moment, said Shumaker.
Shumaker s eye for the picture draws on his other artistic talents of painting and graphic design, but he admits that an eclectic career background has given him additional skill sets essential for having a successful photography business...working with F16s in the Air Force, and a logistics coordinator for ships in the Gulf ports, brings discipline and organizational skills.
