HOUSTON The same store clerk who shot a man after being punched in the face at a Valero gas station had shot a weapon while on the job before.

Akrem Azzam shot Alexander Calloway, 21, early Monday after Calloway punched him in the face. Calloway survived and remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Calloway and his two cousins were trying to enter the gas station on Martin Luther King and Belarbor around 3:30 a.m., but the store was locked.

The young men got into an argument with Azzam, who then opened the door. That s when Calloway hit him and was shot in the stomach. The whole thing was caught on tape.

Azzam told police he feared for his life.

Azzam was shot in the leg during a robbery at the Valero last year.

According to Houston Police, he was involved in another incident at a Shell station where he once worked in January of this year.

The incident involved Azzam s half sister and her companion. The report says they were confronted by the clerk in the parking lot of the store.

When he saw me he got out and (shot) two times in the air, said Leena Azzam.

Police said Azzam claimed his half sister and her companion had threatened him and that he feared for his life.

No charges were ever filed in the case involving Azzam s half sister.

KHOU 11 News has learned that Azzam has been receiving death threats ever since the incident at the Valero.

Azzam no longer works at the Shell station. He could not be reached for comment.
