HOUSTON -- He idolizes the football talents of Michael Vick, John Elway, and Doug Flutie: men with whom he shares a certain football style. But the question in Aggieland is if Johnny Football Manziel will follow in the footsteps of Cam Newton or Tim Tebow and bring a Heisman Trophy home to College Station.

If that dream comes true and actually happens, and something that I m fortunate and blessed enough to receive and bring it back to Texas and Texas A&M, that will be a great feeling, he said of being the frontrunner to win the Heisman Trophy as the most outstanding player in college football this year. Manziel spoke Monday in his first media interview this year.

Head football coach Kevin Sumlin has not let Manziel, or any other freshmen on the football team, be interviewed by members of the media during the season. He made his first exception Monday allowing Manziel to take part in a telephone-only news conference with members of the media from across the country.

I think it s something that s funny, he responded when the very first reporter asked him about the Johnny Football nickname. I think it s something that a lot of people in Aggieland hear and enjoy. It just kind of fit.

Texas A&M uses the Johnny Football name prominently in its website devoted to the Heisman campaign for Manziel. The university is reportedly helping Manziel s parents secure the trademark rights to the now infamous nickname.

As part of the continuing Heisman campaign, Sumlin will allow Manziel take part in a televised news conference on Tuesday. Every major media sports outlet has expressed interest in getting a chance to interview Manziel .
