MISSOURI CITY, Texas -- Students in the Houston area are learning a lot through Rachel s Callenge, a movement based on the life and writings of Rachel Scott the first student killed in the Columbine massacre.

At Baines Middle School in Missouri City, character education isn t just another lesson. It s a way of reaching out.

11 News was there as the teachers tackled sensitive and serious issues, like harassment and intimidation.

Baines is one of several schools participating in Rachel s Challenge, and educators say it s made a difference.

They re crediting a simple principle a chain reaction of kindness and compassion.

I hope that our efforts at character education and Rachel s Challenge and other things of that nature lead kids to make those kinds of decisions and not the knee-jerk reaction that most people would make, Baines Principal David Yaffie said.

So far, more than 11 million people in six countries have heard Rachel Scott s life-changing message.
