HOUSTON -- The parents 20-month-old fire victim Kendyll Stradford gasped with disbelief when they learned Jessica Tata escaped to Nigeria, said Christopher Leonard, the family s attorney.

She s just let down by that, Leonard said of the girl s mother. She could just not believe that happened.

But in terms of the ongoing search for blame between the Houston Fire Department and the Harris County District Attorney s Office, Leonard says his clients would not weigh-in on that debate.

I think there's enough sorrow to go around with the death of these innocent children, he said. But as long as somebody is making an effort to try and bring this lady back to answer to these allegations that is the small sliver of hope my clients are looking for right now.

Houston Mayor Annise Parker, when asked after Wednesday s City Council meeting for her opinion, said blame should only be assigned to one person: Jessica Tata.

Where the blame apparently belongs in this tragedy is the woman who left children, she was being paid to take care of, unattended, Parker said.
