HOUSTON -- U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu says he s growing more optimistic about efforts to stop a broken underwater well from shooting oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

Chu spoke at a Houston news conference Wednesday, saying he s feeling better about the situation because of plans that are in place. He declined provide any details about the source of his optimism, however.

He says scientific experts from around the country are in Houston and still being flown in to BP PLC s command center in the city.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar also appeared at the news conference, saying he was glad that BP is taking responsibility for the accident.

BP s latest bid to stop the oil leak was a new containment box.
